Obstacles in Rebuilding God’s Temple – Lessons from Ezra Chapter 4

In the precious name of our good Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, may His grace and peace abound among you. Today, let us consider the obstacles that arose when the people sought to rebuild the temple that had been completely destroyed.

The Persian king Cyrus not only granted permission to rebuild the temple but also made all the necessary arrangements for it. The temple in Jerusalem had been destroyed, and the people were taken captive and lived as slaves in Babylon. After nearly seventy years, a wonderful opportunity arose for them to return to their land and rebuild the temple once again.

In the same way, today we ourselves are the temple of God. We carry a great responsibility to build this temple properly. While building the temple of our lives, we may face many obstacles. Yet, if we overcome them and build ourselves as a temple pleasing to God, His glory and His presence will dwell within us.

FIRST ONE

Let us read Ezra 4:1–2. When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple for the Lord, the God of Israel, they came to Zerubbabel and the heads of the families and said, “Let us help you build, because, like you, we seek your God.”

As soon as the enemies heard about the rebuilding of the temple, they came to Jerusalem and pretended to join hands with the people, claiming that they too worship the same God. Outwardly, their offer appeared good.

But the leaders gave a remarkable response. They clearly stated that there was no partnership between them, and that they alone would build the temple of their God without any help from their enemies.

In reality, building God’s temple together with enemies is never appropriate. The enemies had no true desire to see the temple completed. They concealed their evil intentions and attempted to sabotage the work from within.

Dear beloved, in our lives too, we cannot build God’s temple by partnering with our enemies. We must clearly identify who our enemies are.

Our enemies are:

1. The World

Though we live in the world, we must not belong to it. The Apostle John clearly warns us not to love the world or the things of the world. Loving the world makes it impossible to build God’s temple.

The world promotes money, possessions, wealth, and material desires. If we chase after these things with longing hearts, we cannot build God’s temple. We must cast these aside.

We need not worry about food or basic needs. Our Lord is powerful enough to sustain us. We brought nothing into this world, and we will take nothing out. Therefore, we must seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.

Today, many believers spend excessive time pursuing worldly matters, neglecting prayer, the Word of God, fellowship, and God’s house. The world is an enemy that we must firmly resist.

2. The Flesh

There are many works of the flesh, and walking according to them makes it impossible to consecrate God’s temple. Scripture repeatedly lists these works throughout the New Testament.

Immorality, deceit, jealousy, anger, quarrels, slander, pride, bitterness, and sinful speech are all works of the flesh. These are enemies that cannot cooperate in building God’s temple.

Like the leaders of Judah, we too must say clearly, “We have nothing in common,” and refuse to partner with the flesh.

3. The Devil

The devil is our enemy and will never desire to see God’s temple built. We must reject his works and stand firmly against him with a longing to build God’s dwelling place.

SECOND ONE

Ezra 4:4 says that the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to continue building.

To discourage means to weaken, to dishearten, and to cause fear. When they were not allowed to join the work, instead of leaving, they stayed and spoke words that weakened the builders.

In our lives too, people may speak words that distract us from our calling and discourage our spiritual progress. Such voices must not be given place.

We must remember that we are building the dwelling place of the living God. We should cast aside discouraging words and stand strong with courage and faith.

THIRD ONE

The same verse says that they troubled the builders to stop the work. Troubling means creating confusion, unrest, and inner turmoil.

Through words and actions, they caused confusion about the future, finances, and family security. These disturbances created serious obstacles to the work.

If we fail to identify and remove such sources of confusion, building God’s temple becomes delayed and difficult.

Even today, we must cast away anything that steals our peace and clarity, and remain focused on completing the temple God has entrusted to us.

FOURTH ONE

Ezra 4:5 tells us that they hired counselors against them to frustrate their plans.

These counselors appeared wise, but their advice was corrupt and destructive. Such counsel would never help in building God’s temple.

In our lives, we must be cautious about the advice we receive. Not every counsel leads us toward God’s glory.

We must examine whether the advice we follow helps us build God’s temple and glorify Him.

FIFTH ONE

Ezra 4:6 says that letters were written to the king to oppose the rebuilding work.

The enemies attempted to use authority and influence to stop the work. Similarly, today, opposition may arise through powerful people or systems.

Yet, no matter the resistance, we must continue building God’s temple so that His name, glory, and presence may be revealed through us.

When God’s temple is completed, His Spirit will work powerfully within us. Wherever we go, blessing, healing, and transformation will follow.

Let us therefore commit ourselves fully to building God’s temple, so that many may see His glory and be drawn to Him. May the Lord surely bless you. Amen.
